Shit has changed

Discovered yesterday that time travel is possible. Videos here and here describe how Ronald Mallett is building a machine which uses light to twist spacetime. This one goes into even further detail. ‘Lasers exist which can create conditions as hot as the centre of the sun,’ the narrator says. (Slightly surprised these aren’t used in wars or something. Perhaps they are). Even more amazing is that the theories are not cod. This is possible, and scientists have known it for over a hundred years.

Here is a rather concise explanation of the LHC. Here is a brilliant tour of the LHC by Brian Cox. Herehere and here are some YouTubers who seem slightly concerned that the world is going to end as a direct result of the LHC. The first video is particularly good. ‘How are we going to trust three normal motherfuckers to do this experiment? This shit was proposed back in 1964. Shit has changed since then. I don’t know if space has changed…how the fuck should I know? I’m not some kind of physicist. I’m just a guy with a camera, sitting in his room, eating fucking flaming hot cheetos, sipping dew, waiting for the Packers game to start.’

So I have some nice research under the belt (plenty more to be done). Now need to spend some time working out the implications of this on the story. Currently having a number of thoughts about time, particularly the stretching and dilating of it. Plus, the psychological slowing of time as well as the implications of relativity. I can’t imagine that scientists and mathematicians are too bothered about the philosophical results of these theories, which has an effect on the characters of this mold. Also worth remembering that this kind of thing is not new to a modern-day scientist (or anyone who has read around any scientific theories - in fact, anybody with any knowledge of Einstein).

My aim is not to write anymore second draft until the blank back pages of the first draft are covered in notes. Currently 16 out of 120 are covered. Could be a while.
